Jordanian Society of Surgeons is inviting you to a scheduled Microsoft Team

Topic: Nutrition in surgical patient and TPN

Abstract: Nutrition plays a critical role in the management and recovery of surgical patients, influencing wound healing, immune function, and overall outcomes. Preoperative nutritional assessment is essential to identify patients at risk of malnutrition, which can lead to increased morbidity and mortality. Postoperatively, adequate nutrition supports recovery by meeting increased metabolic demands. Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) serves as a life-saving intervention for patients unable to tolerate enteral feeding, such as those with bowel obstruction, severe pancreatitis, or gastrointestinal fistulas. However, TPN requires careful monitoring to prevent complications like infections, electrolyte imbalances, and liver dysfunction. This lecture will provide an overview of nutritional needs in surgical patients, indications for TPN, its administration, and strategies to optimize outcomes while minimizing risks.
