Abstract:

Axillary masses, or swellings in the armpit region, represent a diverse range of etiologies, including benign conditions, infections, inflammatory diseases, and malignant processes such as lymphomas or metastatic cancer. Due to the anatomical complexity of the axillary region, which includes lymph nodes, glands, and soft tissue structures, an axillary mass can present diagnostic challenges.

This review provides a comprehensive examination of the clinical presentation, diagnostic approach, and management strategies for axillary masses. We focus on the differential diagnosis, emphasizing the importance of thorough clinical history, physical examination, and the use of imaging modalities like ultrasound, mammography, and MRI.

Biopsy techniques, including fine needle aspiration and core biopsy, are explored for their role in histopathological evaluation. Treatment options are discussed based on the underlying cause, ranging from conservative management for benign or reactive lesions to more aggressive treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy for malignant masses. This review also highlights recent advancements in the diagnostic approach and treatment modalities, offering a holistic view of current clinical practices.
